Fortis SE for 20 users
Westbrook has increased the maximum number of user licenses for its Fortis SE product line to 20 users. That’s five more licenses than our previous cap of 15.

This means customers currently operating with 15 licenses can add five more seats to their Fortis SE system without having to move to the enterprise version of Fortis.  Previously, Fortis SE operated as a multi-user system using MSDE as its backend. With our recent move to a SQL 2005 Express database backend, we are no longer restricted to 15 concurrent licenses.

Introducing Fortis Virtual Scanner
Fortis Virtual Scanner maximizes the efficiency of MFPs by routing image files to virtual scanners that can be installed anywhere on a network.

By separating the manual scanning process from the higher level processes of editing images and routing documents and data, Fortis Virtual Scanner enables MFPs to work at maximum speeds.  As a result, more users at any network location can share a single scanning hardware device.

Fortis Virtual Scanner reads all common image file formats including TIF, JPG, PNG and GIF. The software tool has extensive image manipulation capabilities such as blank page drop-out, border removal, force black and white, deskew and despeckle.

Benefits of Fortis Virtual Scanner include the ability to:

  • Create scripts with underlying business logic to route data automatically
  • Virtually scan via TWAIN from common image file formats regardless of image source
  • Use image clean-up features from the desktop without scanning hardware
  • Select multiple files for acquisition via a single virtual scan

Fortis FormIt creates Web 2.0 forms via
browser-based technology

Fortis FormIt is a Web-based toolkit for creating dynamic, Web 2.0 forms via intuitive drag-and-drop technology.

The 100 percent browser-based design tool includes built-in business rules, pre-configured layouts and automatic synchronization of forms and data.  Users can easily add forms to any Web page.

Implemented in conjunction with Fortis EDM software, customers can use standard templates, or their own, to create multi-page forms, tabbed views and collapsible sections.  A variety of pre-packaged data controls collect basic information, such as name, date, address and cost.

By integrating Fortis FormIt with your Fortis software to create Web-based forms, you can automatically trigger a workflow process and eliminate duplicate data entry by sending data directly to other business applications.

Other benefits of Fortis FormIt include the ability to:

  • Automatically process and update data captured by online forms
  • Apply built-in logic to make forms “sticky” for the user
  • Leverage the workflow capabilities of Fortis document management software

SOLUTIONS IN ACTION

Fraternal benefit society, with over 86,000 members, uses Fortis to flourish in its second century
First Catholic Slovak LAdies AssociationThe First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) is a fraternal benefit society that ranks among the top organizations of its type in the United States today.

Founded in 1892 in Cleveland, FCSLA provides licensed financial products in 30 states.  Membership and its benefits are available to anyone of Slav descent living in the U.S.  The organization implemented Fortis to back up their paper documents – insurance applications and certificates, and to have an efficient way to retrieve the documents once they were archived.  FCSLA also wanted to share information more effectively within the main office and with their branches.

According to Andy Mason, a technical consultant to FCSLA and president of Mason Works, Fortis was the most affordable solution and the easiest to customize.   “Since Fortis is based on an open architecture, it was easy to integrate with other systems that FCSLA was already using.  We were able to set up the indices and document types without restrictions,” says Mason.   And because  Fortis works seamlessly with FCSLA’s line-of-business software, users required minimal training.  >>For the complete story, click here

TECH TIPS

An easy fix for scanner failure
Driver conflicts are one of the most common causes of scanner errors. Conflicts result when you have copied multiple versions of a driver to your system or are running workstations over existing workstations without uninstalling the previous versions.  If Fortis closes or you receive an error message when you initiate a scan, try these simple steps.

Have you installed the scanner provider’s drivers?
If Not:

– Download and install the ISIS and TWAIN drivers from the scanner provider in Windows.
   Then run Setup->Scan in Fortis
– If the Setup for TWAIN does not work, try ISIS

Have you tried a clean workstation setup and have Fortis version 2.4.1 SP1 and above?
If Not:

– Uninstall workstation:  Run the setup.exe in the Fortis\WKSetup folder and when it prompts
you click Remove.  This will uninstall the workstation
– Delete the setscan.ini: Location: Windows folder
– Delete the pixcache.ini: Location: Windows Folder
– Delete the Pixtran folder: Location: Windows Folder
– Cold boot the machine:  Turn completely off and then turn back on
– Turn off Virus Protection: Turn off the service
– Run workstation setup: Run the setup.exe in the Fortis\WKSetup folder
Install only the TWAIN or ISIS drivers for your scanner, not the drivers for the entire software
suite.  It may be easier to download the TWAIN-specific driver from the company’s Web site,
instead of using the scanner software CD that comes with the product
– Run scanner setup in Fortis:  Open scan station and go to Setup->Scan

Fortis ImageIt links documents in Fortis with line-of-business applications for easy retrieval

Employees can spend hours searching through unrelated documents until they spot the one they need. Get a retrieval tool that guarantees quick access to the right information when it’s needed.

Fortis ImageIt is a software option that integrates your core business applications with Fortis to make documents easily accessible without having to leave the primary application in which you are working.  For example, someone working within an accounting application can use a purchase order number to access a corresponding invoice, packing slip or shipping form stored in the Fortis repository without having to leave the accounting application.

The High Price of Discovery
Organizations face significant challenges and the possibility of ever-escalating costs in their efforts to be compliant with the new Federal Rules of Civil Procedure that came into effect on December 1, 2006. There is an enormous and complex set of problems associated with the e-discovery effort, not just because of the sheer volume of content but also because there are many disparate systems that are used to generate and consume this content. These problems often lead to significant investments in the overall e-discovery effort and cost overruns for each litigation discovery. Solving these problems requires a comprehensive approach that not only includes addressing the discovery components but also includes enterprise content management (ECM) and records management (RM). >>More
